Overview

This investigational cell therapy, developed by Daniel B. F. Saris at the Mayo Clinic, is a one-stage surgical treatment for focal hip cartilage defects. It combines autologous chondrons—chondrocytes harvested from the patient that retain their native pericellular matrix—with allogeneic adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (AMSCs) sourced from a donor bank. These components are delivered in a fibrin glue carrier directly into the defect. The AMSCs function as signaling cells, utilizing their trophic and immunomodulatory properties to stimulate the autologous chondrons to proliferate and produce new hyaline-like cartilage matrix, thereby repairing ICRS Grade III or IV lesions ranging from 2 to 6 cm².
