Overview

Autologous concentrated bone marrow cell product is a regenerative medicine therapy developed by Olympus Terumo Biomaterials for the treatment of idiopathic osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). The product is prepared by harvesting bone marrow from the patient's iliac bone and concentrating the mononuclear cell fraction, which is rich in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and hematopoietic stem cells. This concentrate is then implanted into the necrotic area of the femoral head, where the cells differentiate into osteoblasts and secrete angiogenic and osteogenic growth factors, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs). This process facilitates the regeneration of bone tissue and improves local blood supply, thereby preventing the collapse of the femoral head and the progression of the disease. It was approved by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) in February 2024.
