Autologous concentrated growth factor (CGF) is a third-generation platelet concentrate produced from a patient's own venous blood using a specialized centrifugation process with variable speeds. This process results in a product with a denser fibrin matrix and higher concentrations of growth factors compared to earlier generations like Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP). CGF contains a cocktail of bioactive proteins, including transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). These factors work synergistically to promote cell proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis. In the treatment of androgenic alopecia, CGF is injected into the scalp to stimulate hair follicle stem cells, enhance local blood flow, and prolong the hair growth cycle. The development and clinical application of CGF for hair loss have been significantly advanced by researchers at the Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital and Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine.
