Autologous concentrated platelets, commonly referred to as platelet-rich plasma (PRP), is a biologic therapy derived from a patient's own peripheral blood. Developed by Biomet Biologics (now part of Zimmer Biomet) using the GPS III centrifugation system, the preparation contains a high concentration of platelets which, upon activation, release various growth factors and signaling molecules, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). These factors promote angiogenesis, cell proliferation, and collagen synthesis, facilitating tissue repair and tendon healing. It has been primarily evaluated for the treatment of chronic lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), showing efficacy in improving pain and function compared to corticosteroid injections in clinical studies.
