Overview

Autologous conjunctival epithelial cells are a cell-based therapy utilized for the reconstruction of the ocular surface in patients with severe ocular surface diseases. The therapeutic process involves harvesting a small biopsy of healthy conjunctival tissue from the patient, followed by ex vivo cultivation and expansion of the epithelial cells, typically on a scaffold such as denuded human amniotic membrane (HAM). The resulting tissue-engineered epithelial sheet is then transplanted onto the patient's eye to replace diseased or damaged tissue. This modality is primarily indicated for total limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD), symblepharon, and large conjunctival defects following the excision of nevi or tumors. By restoring a stable epithelial barrier, the therapy helps to reduce corneal neovascularization, decrease inflammation, and improve corneal transparency and visual acuity.
