Overview

Autologous conjunctival epithelial stem cells are a cell therapy product involving the harvest, ex vivo expansion, and subsequent transplantation of a patient's own conjunctival stem cells. This approach is primarily used for ocular surface reconstruction in patients with conditions like limbal epithelial stem cell deficiency (LSCD), symblepharon, and conjunctival fornix cicatrization. By expanding these cells in a laboratory setting, typically on a carrier such as amniotic membrane, clinicians can generate a sufficient quantity of healthy epithelial tissue to restore the ocular surface, particularly when the limbus is severely damaged or when conjunctival tissue is lost due to scarring or chemical burns.
