Autologous cord blood is a cell therapy being investigated by the Children's Hospital of Fudan University for the treatment of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and cerebral infarction. The therapy involves the collection of the infant's own umbilical cord blood at birth, which is then processed and administered intravenously in divided aliquots during the first three days of life. This treatment is typically evaluated as an adjunct to therapeutic hypothermia, the current standard of care for HIE. The therapeutic potential of autologous cord blood is attributed to its diverse population of stem and progenitor cells, including mesenchymal stem cells and hematopoietic stem cells, which are thought to provide neuroprotection by modulating the inflammatory response, reducing oxidative stress, and releasing neurotrophic factors that promote neural repair and regeneration in the damaged brain tissue.
