Overview

This investigational autologous cell therapy combination consists of umbilical cord blood (CB) and human placental-derived stem cells (HPDSC). Developed by New York Medical College, the therapy is being evaluated for the treatment of severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in neonates. The treatment involves the intravenous infusion of the patient's own cord blood cells and placental stem cells, which are hypothesized to migrate to damaged brain tissue and promote repair through paracrine signaling, anti-inflammatory effects, and potential neural regeneration. A Phase 2 study (NCT02434965) is assessing the safety and feasibility of this combined cell product in neonates with severe HIE.
