Overview

Autologous cord blood-derived mononuclear cells (ACBMNCs) are an investigational cell therapy consisting of a heterogeneous population of mononuclear cells, including hematopoietic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, and endothelial progenitor cells, harvested from a newborn's own umbilical cord blood. Developed by the Centre Hospitalier Regional De Marseille (Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Marseille) for the treatment of neonatal hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE), this therapy is typically administered intravenously as an adjunct to therapeutic hypothermia. The cells are hypothesized to exert neuroprotective and regenerative effects through paracrine mechanisms, releasing a cocktail of neurotrophic factors and anti-inflammatory cytokines that cross the blood-brain barrier to reduce neuroinflammation, limit apoptosis, and stimulate endogenous neural repair and angiogenesis in the damaged neonatal brain.
