Overview

Autologous cord blood derived stem cells are multipotent hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem/progenitor cells isolated from the umbilical cord blood of an individual at birth and stored for potential future therapeutic use by that same individual. These cells can differentiate into various cell types, including all major blood lineages (via hematopoietic stem cells) and some non-hematopoietic tissues (via mesenchymal or very small embryonic-like stem cells). The mechanism of action is primarily through engraftment to restore or regenerate damaged tissue—most commonly bone marrow after high-dose chemotherapy—or via immunomodulation and paracrine effects in regenerative medicine. Autologous use eliminates the risk of immune rejection or graft-versus-host disease associated with allogeneic transplants. Clinical research has explored their application in conditions such as hematologic malignancies, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, and other neurological or regenerative indications[2][3][6][8].
