Autologous cord blood mononuclear cells (MNCs) are a heterogeneous population of cells derived from a patient's own umbilical cord blood, typically collected at birth and cryopreserved for future therapeutic use. This cell fraction includes hematopoietic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, endothelial progenitor cells, and various immune cells such as lymphocytes and monocytes. The therapy is primarily investigated for its neuroprotective and regenerative potential in pediatric neurological disorders, including cerebral palsy, neonatal ischemic stroke, and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). The therapeutic effect is thought to be mediated by paracrine mechanisms, where the cells secrete anti-inflammatory cytokines, neurotrophic factors, and angiogenic signals that modulate the immune response, reduce neuroinflammation, and support endogenous tissue repair rather than through direct cell replacement.
