Autologous cryopreserved platelets are a specialized cellular therapy product consisting of a patient's own platelets that are collected via apheresis, frozen with a cryoprotectant (typically dimethyl sulfoxide or ThromboSol), and stored for future use. This therapeutic approach is primarily utilized to manage Platelet Transfusion Refractoriness (PTR) in patients who have developed alloantibodies to donor platelets, as well as to support patients during severe chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia or autologous bone marrow transplantation. By using the patient's own cells, the risk of immune-mediated rejection (alloimmunization) and transfusion-transmitted infections is virtually eliminated. Research has demonstrated that these platelets, although experiencing some functional loss during the freeze-thaw process, remain effective at achieving hemostasis and providing significant corrected count increments (CCI) upon reinfusion.
