Autologous cultivated conjunctival epithelium is an advanced cell therapy used for the reconstruction and restoration of the ocular surface in patients with severe conjunctival damage. The therapeutic process involves harvesting a small biopsy of healthy conjunctival tissue from the patient, which is then expanded *ex vivo* using tissue engineering techniques to generate a pluristratified epithelial sheet. This cultivated sheet, which contains conjunctival progenitor cells, is subsequently transplanted onto the damaged or diseased areas of the patient's eye. This approach is particularly valuable for treating large or bilateral conjunctival defects, such as symblepharon, extensive nevi, or complex wound leakages (e.g., in Marfan syndrome), where conventional donor tissue or heterotopic grafts may be unavailable or insufficient. It aims to restore a stable, non-keratinized epithelial layer and improve both ocular function and cosmesis.
