Overview

Autologous cultivated limbal epithelial transplantation (CLET) is a cell therapy developed by the Ministry of Health, Malaysia, for the treatment of limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD). The procedure involves harvesting a small biopsy of limbal tissue from the patient's healthy eye, expanding the limbal epithelial stem cells ex vivo on a human amniotic membrane carrier, and then surgically transplanting the resulting epithelial sheet onto the damaged cornea. This treatment is designed to restore the ocular surface by replenishing the stem cell reservoir, thereby improving corneal clarity and visual acuity. In the clinical trial NCT02592330, this biological intervention was specifically referred to by the name "conservative" and was evaluated in a Phase 3 setting against standard medical therapy.
