MACI (autologous cultured chondrocytes on porcine collagen membrane) is an autologous cellularized scaffold product indicated for the repair of symptomatic, full-thickness cartilage defects. The product is manufactured by harvesting a small sample of healthy articular cartilage from the patient, which is then processed to isolate and expand the chondrocytes in a laboratory setting. These cultured cells are seeded onto a porcine-derived Type I/III collagen membrane (ACI-Maix). During a surgical procedure, the cellularized scaffold is trimmed to fit the patient's specific defect and implanted to promote the regeneration of hyaline-like cartilage. It was originally developed by Genzyme (Sanofi) and Verigen before being acquired by Vericel Corporation.
