Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Autologous cultured oral mucosal epithelium (marketed as Ocural) is an autologous tissue-engineered cell therapy developed by Japan Tissue Engineering (J-TEC) for the treatment of limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD). The therapy is manufactured by harvesting a small sample of the patient's own oral mucosal tissue, isolating the epithelial cells, and culturing them into a transplantable cell sheet. When grafted onto the ocular surface, these cells engraft and epithelialize, repairing the damaged corneal epithelium and restoring visual function. It was approved in Japan in June 2021 and received National Health Insurance (NHI) listing in December 2021.
