Autologous cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cell therapy is an adoptive cell immunotherapy developed and evaluated at Jinling Hospital in China for the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). CIK cells are a unique, heterogeneous population of immune cells generated by the ex-vivo expansion of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in the presence of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), anti-CD3 antibodies, and interleukin-2 (IL-2). These cells exhibit a dual phenotype, expressing both the T-cell marker CD3 and the natural killer (NK) cell marker CD56, which allows them to exert potent, non-MHC-restricted cytotoxicity against a broad range of tumor cells. In clinical practice at Jinling Hospital, CIK therapy is typically administered as an adjunct to standard chemotherapy regimens, such as paclitaxel and cisplatin (TP), to improve clinical outcomes and enhance the patient's anti-tumor immune response.
