Overview

Autologous cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells are an adoptive immunotherapy consisting of ex vivo expanded T lymphocytes that express both T-cell (CD3+) and natural killer (NK) cell (CD56+) markers. Developed by the Italian Sarcoma Group for the treatment of advanced, relapsed, and non-resectable sarcomas, these cells exhibit potent, MHC-independent antitumor activity. This cytotoxicity is primarily mediated by the NKG2D receptor, which recognizes stress-induced ligands on tumor cells. The production process involves collecting a patient's peripheral blood, expanding the CIK population in a specialized cell factory (such as the Regina Margherita Children's Hospital Cell Factory), and re-infusing the cells into the patient.
