Autologous cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells are an adoptive cell therapy being investigated by Kunming Medical University for the treatment of advanced adenocarcinoma non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). CIK cells are a heterogeneous population of immune effector cells, predominantly CD3+CD56+ T cells, generated by the ex vivo expansion of a patient's own peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in the presence of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin-2 (IL-2), and anti-CD3 antibodies. These cells exhibit potent, non-MHC-restricted cytolytic activity against a broad spectrum of tumor cells. In clinical trials, this therapy is administered via intravenous infusion, often in combination with the EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor gefitinib, to enhance anti-tumor efficacy and improve survival outcomes in patients who have failed prior chemotherapy.
