Overview

Autologous cytokines (NYU Langone Health) is a personalized immunotherapy developed for the treatment of metastatic melanoma. The therapy involves the preparation of a sterile mixture of cytokines derived from the patient's own cells, which are then administered via weekly intratumoral injections into cutaneous metastatic nodules. The primary mechanism of action is to induce a systemic immune response, often referred to as an abscopal effect, where the localized injection triggers the recruitment and activation of dense lymphocytic infiltrates in non-injected metastases. This systemic activation can lead to the complete regression of distant, never-injected lesions. Clinical evaluations at NYU Langone Health have demonstrated that this approach can result in long-term disease-free survival in a subset of patients with advanced melanoma.
