This autologous dendritic cell cancer vaccine is an investigational cellular immunotherapy developed by Dr. Edward Hirschowitz at the University of Kentucky for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The vaccine is prepared by isolating a patient's peripheral blood mononuclear cells via leukapheresis, which are then cultured ex vivo to differentiate into mature dendritic cells. These dendritic cells are subsequently pulsed with antigens derived from allogeneic tumor cell lines or apoptotic tumor cells. Once injected subcutaneously, these 'primed' dendritic cells migrate to lymph nodes where they present tumor-specific antigens to naive T cells, stimulating a systemic cytotoxic T-lymphocyte response against the patient's lung cancer cells.
