This combination therapy consists of an autologous dendritic cell vaccine and interleukin-2 (IL-2), developed by the Istituto Romagnolo per lo Studio dei Tumori (IRST). The vaccine is produced by harvesting a patient's own dendritic cells and loading them with autologous tumor homogenate, which contains a broad spectrum of patient-specific tumor-associated antigens. This personalized approach aims to prime the immune system to recognize and target residual cancer cells. Following vaccination, IL-2 is administered subcutaneously to act as an immune stimulant, promoting the expansion and activation of cytotoxic T lymphocytes and natural killer cells. The regimen is currently being investigated in a Phase II clinical trial as an adjuvant treatment for patients with resected stage IV rare cancers, specifically head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, neuroendocrine tumors, and soft tissue sarcomas.
