Autologous dendritic cell therapy is an experimental cell-based immunotherapy developed by Stanford University for the treatment of liver metastases, specifically those arising from colorectal or neuroendocrine cancers. The treatment protocol involves harvesting a patient's own dendritic cells and subsequently injecting them intratumorally into liver lesions that have been thermally ablated using radiofrequency ablation (RFA). The rationale behind this approach is that RFA induces tumor necrosis and the release of tumor-associated antigens; the injected dendritic cells then capture these antigens in situ, migrate to regional lymph nodes, and present them to T cells. This process is intended to prime a systemic anti-tumor immune response, potentially addressing both the treated lesion and distant micrometastases.
