Autologous dendritic cells electroporated with HIV-1 Rev mRNA is an investigational cell-based therapeutic vaccine component developed by researchers at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Therapy) in collaboration with Erasmus MC, Rotterdam. The therapy consists of a patient's own monocyte-derived dendritic cells loaded via electroporation with mRNA encoding the HIV-1 Rev regulatory protein. This cell therapy is designed to stimulate T cell-mediated immunity, specifically priming and expanding HIV-1 Rev-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cell responses. It was evaluated as part of the DC-TRN vaccine regimen—which also includes dendritic cells electroporated with Tat and Nef mRNAs—in a Phase I/IIa clinical trial in adults living with HIV-1 who were stable on combination antiretroviral therapy (cART).
