This experimental therapeutic vaccine approach, developed by the University of São Paulo General Hospital, is an autologous cellular immunotherapy designed for the treatment of HIV infection. The therapy involves harvesting a patient's own dendritic cells (DCs) and pulsing them ex vivo with autologous HIV that has been chemically inactivated using Aldrithiol-2 (AT-2). AT-2 is a chemical agent that eliminates viral infectivity while preserving the structural integrity of viral envelope proteins, which are critical for immune recognition. These loaded dendritic cells are then reinfused into the patient to stimulate or enhance HIV-specific cellular immune responses, particularly targeting T-cell activation. The approach represents a personalized medicine strategy aimed at controlling viral load in treatment-naive, chronically infected HIV patients.
