Autologous dendritic cells with no mRNA transfection refers to the control or placebo arm of a Phase 1/2 clinical trial (NCT00833781) conducted by Massachusetts General Hospital. In this study, patients with chronic HIV-1 infection on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) received their own dendritic cells that were processed in the same manner as the active treatment but without the transfection of mRNA encoding HIV-1 antigens (Gag and Nef). This mock-transfected cell preparation served as a comparator to evaluate the safety and specific immunogenic effects of the active mRNA-transfected dendritic cell vaccine. The cells were administered via intradermal injection at multiple intervals.
