Overview

Autologous EBV- and oncogene-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes is an adoptive cell therapy developed by Sun Yat-Sen University Cancer Center for the treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). This personalized immunotherapy involves the ex vivo expansion of a patient's own T cells, which are specifically primed to recognize and eliminate cells expressing Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) antigens, such as Latent Membrane Protein 1 (LMP1) and Latent Membrane Protein 2 (LMP2), as well as other tumor-associated oncogenic proteins. Since EBV is a primary oncogenic driver in nearly all cases of non-keratinizing NPC, these targeted cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) are designed to provide a precise immune response against the malignancy. The therapy is primarily investigated for patients with stage IV or recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma who have limited options following standard chemotherapy.
