Autologous EBV and oncogene-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes are a form of adoptive cell therapy in which a patient's own (autologous) T cells are collected, expanded ex vivo to specifically target antigens from the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and relevant oncogenes, then reinfused into the patient. These CTLs are predominantly CD3+ CD8+ cells that recognize and kill EBV-infected or tumorigenic cells expressing viral or oncogenic antigens. The therapy aims to restore or enhance cellular immune responses against chronic active EBV infection or malignancies associated with EBV/oncogene expression. Clinical studies have shown that this approach can resolve symptoms of chronic active EBV infection, normalize anti-EBV antibody titers, reduce viral load in transplant recipients at risk for posttransplantation lymphoproliferative disorders (PTLD), and control tumor growth in preclinical models[1][2][4][5]. The treatment is generally well tolerated with minimal toxicity reported.
