Autologous endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are primitive bone marrow cells that have the capacity to proliferate, migrate, and differentiate into mature endothelial cells that line the lumen of blood vessels. These cells are harvested from a patient's own bone marrow or peripheral blood, expanded ex vivo, and then reinfused intravenously. EPCs possess both stem cell and endothelial cell characteristics, gradually losing stem cell properties while gaining endothelial cell features during maturation. They are typically identified by surface markers including CD34, CD133, and VEGFR-2 (vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2). EPCs participate in neovascularization and vascular repair processes, making them potential therapeutic agents for various ischemic and vascular conditions.
