Autologous endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) therapy is an investigational cell-based biologic developed by Southern Medical University for the treatment of chronic ischemic stroke. The therapy involves the ex vivo expansion of a patient's own EPCs derived from bone marrow. These cells, which exhibit properties of both endothelial and adult stem cells, are administered to promote vascular repair and the generation of new blood vessels (vasculogenesis and angiogenesis) within the damaged cerebral tissue. The primary goal is to restore neurological function, including motor, sensory, and cognitive abilities, in patients with persistent deficits following a stroke. The therapy is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1/2 clinical trial (NCT02605707).
