Overview

Autologous engineered urethral constructs are bioengineered tissue replacements created using a patient's own cells for the treatment of urethral strictures. These constructs are manufactured by harvesting autologous urothelial cells (UCs) and smooth muscle cells (SMCs) from the patient's bladder tissue, expanding them in culture, and seeding them onto tubular scaffolds made of materials such as Polyglycolic Acid (PGA). The resulting construct is then surgically implanted to replace damaged or strictured urethral segments. This tissue engineering approach aims to provide a long-term solution for patients with complex urethral strictures that are too long for conventional treatment methods, potentially eliminating stricture recurrence and restoring normal urinary function.
