Overview

Autologous epidermal cell suspension is a cell-based biologic therapy developed by the SCARM Institute in Tabriz, Iran, for the treatment of second-degree burns. The therapy involves harvesting a 4mm punch biopsy of healthy skin from the patient, which is then processed in a laboratory to isolate and suspend autologous epidermal cells, primarily keratinocytes. This suspension is applied topically to the burn wound to promote rapid re-epithelialization and improve both functional and aesthetic outcomes. By delivering a concentrated population of the patient's own skin cells directly to the injury site, the treatment aims to provide superior healing compared to conventional topical treatments like silver sulfadiazine. It has been evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT03162367) at Sina Hospital in Tabriz.
