Autologous extrahepatic cholangiocyte organoids are a personalized regenerative medicine product designed to repair or replace damaged bile ducts. These organoids are generated by isolating primary cholangiocytes from the patient’s own biliary tissue (often through bile samples or biopsies), expanding them in a three-dimensional culture system to form organotypic structures, and subsequently transplanting them back into the patient. The mechanism involves the integration of these organoids into the host biliary epithelium, where they provide functional reconstruction of the ductal lining, restoring bile transport and preventing fibrosis. This approach is particularly targeted at conditions like primary sclerosing cholangitis and biliary atresia, aiming to provide an alternative to liver transplantation by directly repairing the extrahepatic biliary system.
