Overview

Autologous fecal matter transplant (FMT) is an investigational microbiome-restoration therapy developed by Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. It is specifically designed to mitigate gut microbiome dysbiosis in infants and toddlers who have undergone antibiotic treatment. The procedure involves the collection and preservation of the patient's own fecal microbiota prior to antibiotic exposure, which is subsequently reintroduced—often via oral administration in milk or formula—to rapidly restore the intestinal flora to its baseline composition. This approach aims to prevent the long-term health complications associated with early-life microbiome disruption, such as obesity, asthma, and metabolic disorders, by bypassing the slow and often incomplete natural recovery process.
