Overview

Autologous fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a microbial therapy being investigated by University Hospital, Ghent, specifically for the decolonization of multi-drug resistant organisms (MDRO), such as Gram-negative bacteria, in hospitalized patients. The procedure involves the administration of a patient's own previously collected and processed fecal microbiota back into their gastrointestinal tract. The therapeutic goal is to restore the patient's native microbial diversity and ecological balance, which may have been disrupted by antibiotic use or illness. By reinstating the original commensal flora, the therapy aims to provide colonization resistance and outcompete resistant bacterial strains that have colonized the gut. In the DEKODON clinical trial, this autologous approach serves as a controlled comparator to allogenic (donor) FMT to determine the efficacy of self-restoration versus donor-driven microbiome replacement.
