Overview

Autologous fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an investigational therapy being developed by the University of Amsterdam for type 1 diabetes mellitus. [2, 3] The treatment consists of freeze-dried fecal matter from the patient (autologous), which is placed in capsules for daily oral administration. [3, 4] The underlying principle is that modulating the patient's intestinal microbiota can help preserve the function of remaining insulin-producing beta cells in individuals recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease. [3, 7] A proof-of-concept study and a subsequent single-arm pilot study (ENCAPSULATE-DM1) suggested the approach is safe and may halt the decline of beta-cell function. [2, 4, 8] A larger, Phase 2 placebo-controlled trial, FACT-T1D, is planned to confirm these findings. [3]
