Overview

Autologous female germline stem cells (FGSCs) are a type of stem cell therapy being developed for the treatment of female infertility and diminished ovarian reserve. The therapy involves the isolation of germline stem cells from a patient's own ovarian cortical tissue, followed by their expansion in vitro and subsequent autologous transplantation back into the ovaries. The mechanism of action is based on the potential of these cells to differentiate into new oocytes and rejuvenate the ovarian microenvironment, thereby restoring follicular development and improving reproductive outcomes. This approach, pioneered by researchers at Ruijin Hospital and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, challenges the traditional dogma that the oocyte pool is fixed at birth and cannot be replenished in adulthood.
