Autologous fibroblast and peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) mixed sheet is an autologous cell therapy developed for the treatment of refractory venous skin ulcers. The therapy utilizes cell sheet engineering to create a transplantable layer containing both fibroblasts, which synthesize extracellular matrix and growth factors, and PBMCs, which promote angiogenesis and modulate the local inflammatory environment. By applying this mixed-cell sheet directly to the wound bed, the treatment aims to stimulate healing in chronic ulcers that have failed to respond to standard compression therapy and local wound care. Clinical studies at Tokai University have demonstrated the safety and preliminary efficacy of this approach in patients with refractory ulcers.
