Overview

Autologous follicular stem cells refer to stem cells harvested from an individual's own hair follicles, usually from the scalp, to support hair regeneration and combat hair loss, especially androgenetic alopecia. These stem cells are isolated by collecting hair follicle units via minimally invasive techniques (commonly the FUE method), followed by chemical and enzymatic processing to create a suspension rich in follicular stem cells. When injected back into the scalp, these cells can support the survival and regeneration of hair follicles, reverse miniaturization, and accelerate wound healing. Mechanistically, these stem cells contribute to the hair cycle by replenishing or revitalizing dermal papilla cells and epithelial stem cells, which are central for hair follicle growth and maintenance. The approach is typically autologous (using the patient’s own cells) and experimental, mainly used in research settings targeting hair loss disorders such as androgenetic alopecia. Clinical trials also explore combining these cells with adjunct therapies, including platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or secretome products to enhance the regenerative effects[1][2][3][4][5][6][8].
