Overview

Autologous gamma delta (γδ) T cells are an adoptive cell therapy involving the ex vivo expansion and activation of a patient's own γδ T lymphocytes, typically the Vγ9Vδ2 subtype. These cells are unique in their ability to recognize and kill tumor cells in a non-MHC-restricted manner, often through the γδ T-cell receptor (TCR) and natural killer receptors like NKG2D. Expansion is frequently achieved using phosphoantigens or aminobisphosphonates (such as zoledronic acid) in the presence of interleukin-2 (IL-2). Once reinfused, these cells exert anti-tumor or anti-viral effects. Clinical investigations have explored their use in various solid tumors, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), pancreatic cancer, and biliary tract cancers, as well as chronic viral infections like hepatitis B.
