Autologous granular cartilage cells is a cell-based therapy used for the repair of articular cartilage defects and the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. The procedure involves harvesting healthy autologous cartilage from a non-weight-bearing area of the patient's joint, which is then fragmented or granulated into small pieces. These granular cartilage fragments, containing viable chondrocytes within their native extracellular matrix, are then transplanted into the site of the cartilage defect. This approach aims to promote the regeneration of hyaline-like cartilage by leveraging the natural proliferative and migratory capacity of chondrocytes from the minced tissue. It is being evaluated as an alternative to techniques like microfracture or subchondral bone drilling, potentially offering superior tissue quality and durability.
