Autologous GVAX is an investigational cancer vaccine consisting of a patient's own colorectal cancer cells that have been lethally irradiated and genetically modified to secrete human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF). Developed by Massachusetts General Hospital, this cell-based immunotherapy is designed to stimulate a systemic anti-tumor immune response. Upon administration, the secreted GM-CSF recruits and activates antigen-presenting cells, such as dendritic cells, to the vaccination site. These cells then process the diverse array of tumor-associated antigens provided by the irradiated autologous cells and present them to T-cells, potentially leading to the destruction of remaining cancer cells and reducing the risk of recurrence, particularly in patients with resectable hepatic metastases.
