Autologous HCMV-specific T cells is an adoptive cellular therapy (ACT) developed by the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute) for the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). The therapy involves isolating T cells from a patient's blood, expanding them in vitro to specifically recognize human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) antigens—most notably the pp65 protein—and then re-infusing them into the patient. Since HCMV antigens are frequently expressed in GBM tumor cells but absent in healthy brain tissue, these T cells provide a targeted immune attack against the malignancy. Clinical evaluation has focused on Phase I trials for both primary and recurrent GBM to assess safety and potential survival benefits.
