Autologous hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPCs) are utilized as a cellular therapy in a specialized treatment protocol for refractory Churg-Strauss syndrome (eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis). Developed by Mounzer Agha, the approach involves harvesting the patient's own CD34+ stem cells, followed by an intensive immuno-ablative conditioning regimen consisting of high-dose cyclophosphamide, antithymocyte globulin (ATG), and total lymphatic irradiation (TLI). The goal of this "immune system reset" is to eradicate the autoreactive lymphocytes responsible for the systemic vasculitis and then re-establish a healthy immune system through the infusion of the autologous HPCs. This pilot study aimed to achieve sustained, treatment-free remission in patients who had failed standard immunosuppressive therapies.
