This is an autologous cellular immunotherapy consisting of a patient's own dendritic cells that have been loaded ex vivo with peptides derived from the E6 and E7 oncoproteins of the Human Papillomavirus type 6 (HPV6). Dendritic cells are professional antigen-presenting cells; when pulsed with these specific viral antigens and re-administered to the patient, they are intended to prime and activate cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) to recognize and destroy HPV6-infected cells. This approach is primarily investigated for the treatment of Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis (RRP), a rare disease characterized by the growth of noncancerous tumors in the airway caused by HPV6 or HPV11. The therapy aims to provide a targeted immune response to eliminate the underlying viral infection and reduce the frequency of surgical interventions required for tumor removal.
