Overview

This investigational cell therapy consists of autologous human bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMCs) developed by the University of Miami for the treatment of chronic ischemic left ventricular dysfunction secondary to myocardial infarction. The therapy involves the extraction of a patient's own bone marrow, followed by minimal processing to isolate the mononuclear cell fraction, which includes various progenitor cell populations. These cells are delivered via transendocardial injection using a specialized delivery system, such as the BioCardia Helical Infusion Catheter. The therapeutic approach, termed cellular cardiomyoplasty, aims to repair or replace damaged, necrotic, or scarred myocardium. The mechanism of action is believed to involve the release of paracrine factors that stimulate angiogenesis, reduce apoptosis, and modulate inflammation, as well as the potential differentiation of progenitor cells into cardiac lineages, ultimately improving left ventricular ejection fraction and preventing adverse remodeling.
