Overview

Autologous human platelet lysate is a biologic product derived from the lysis of platelets collected from an individual’s own blood. It is rich in growth factors (such as PDGF, TGF-β1, IGF1, BDNF, EGF, VEGF), cytokines, chemokines, plasma proteins (albumin, protease inhibitors like alpha 1-antitrypsin and alpha 2-macroglobulin), immunoglobulins (G, A and M), minerals (sodium, potassium, magnesium), vitamins and glucose[1][4]. The mechanism of action involves delivering a concentrated mix of these bioactive molecules to sites requiring tissue regeneration or repair. This promotes cell proliferation and differentiation—especially in mesenchymal stromal cells—and supports wound healing processes by stimulating angiogenesis and modulating inflammation[1][5][6]. Autologous HPL is used in regenerative medicine for conditions such as osteoarthritis, tendon disorders, alopecia and oral mucositis; it also serves as a supplement for cell culture media to enable animal serum-free expansion of therapeutic cells[2][5]. Preparation involves collecting peripheral blood from the patient/donor followed by centrifugation to isolate platelets which are then lysed via freeze-thaw cycles or sonication[4]. As an autologous product made from the patient’s own blood components rather than manufactured by pharmaceutical companies at scale[3], its use minimizes risks of immunologic reactions or disease transmission.
