**Autologous human Schwann cells** are an investigational, patient-specific peripheral-glial cell therapy developed at the University of Miami for repair of traumatic spinal cord and peripheral nerve injuries. Schwann cells are harvested from the participant's peripheral nerve, typically the sural nerve, purified and expanded ex vivo, then transplanted into a spinal cord lesion or applied to nerve autografts. The intended regenerative activity is multifactorial: transplanted Schwann cells can support axonal growth and plasticity, promote remyelination, provide neurotrophic support, and contribute extracellular matrix molecules that favor nerve repair. Clinical studies have evaluated the therapy in subacute and chronic spinal cord injury and are evaluating it as an adjunct to autograft repair in severe peripheral nerve injury. It is not an approved commercial product and has no assigned INN or proprietary development code.
