Overview

This investigational cell therapy consists of unmanipulated autologous human umbilical cord blood (hUCB) mononuclear cells, developed by Dr. James Baumgartner for the treatment of perinatal arterial ischemic stroke. The therapy involves the intravenous infusion of the patient's own cord blood, which has been banked at birth. The mononuclear cell fraction contains a heterogeneous population of cells, including hematopoietic progenitor cells (CD34+), mesenchymal stem cells, monocytes, and lymphocytes. The therapeutic effect is believed to be mediated through paracrine mechanisms, where the infused cells secrete neurotrophic factors, cytokines, and chemokines that reduce neuroinflammation and stimulate endogenous neural repair and regeneration in the damaged brain tissue.
