Autologous immunoglobulin refers to the use of a patient's own purified immunoglobulins (typically IgG) administered intramuscularly as an experimental therapy for immune-mediated diseases. Unlike standard immune globulin therapies derived from pooled donor plasma, this approach uses the individual's own antibodies. Studies have shown that intramuscular administration of autologous total IgG can induce systemic immunomodulatory effects, including activation and expansion of regulatory T cells and increased production of anti-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-10 and IFN-γ[3][5][8]. Clinical trials in patients with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis demonstrated significant improvements in disease severity and reductions in serum IgE levels following repeated injections[5][8]. The proposed mechanism involves anti-idiotypic immunomodulation—whereby the administered antibodies modulate pathogenic immune responses through direct or indirect effects on T cell populations[5]. This therapy remains investigational; it is not approved for routine clinical use.
